And they shall rebuild the old ruins, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the ruined cities, the desolations of many generations.
— Isaiah 61:4
The effort to rebuild North Highland is a huge undertaking. Practically, it entails the purchasing of homes (Housing Initiative), construction projects, clean-up projects and the upkeep of those efforts made. Rebuilding North Highland offers residents the opportunity to take pride in their neighborhood and to get involved with the effort to maintain it.
For example, every house that was worked on by volunteers during Summer Missions Project 2009 has been maintained by its residents. In addition to that, a local plumber who dwells in one of the homes that had a porch repaired offered his skills to the Summer Missions Project 2010 and continues to offer his services to our church! Since then many more projects have been done throughout the community in an effort to rebuild North Highland from the inside-out. People helping others and in-turn those who are helped lending a hand themselves–this is rebuilding North Highland.
“You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself; I am the LORD.” — Leviticus 19:18
One of the reasons a neighborhood declines is because people in that neighborhood become disjointed. Neighbors cease to relate and connect for the common good of their corner of the neighborhood. One of the contributing factors to this problem is that many deem their neighbors untrustworthy and make the decision to keep to themselves. This often results in an increase in crime because neighbors cease to be “neighborly”, by no longer looking out for one another. We at Truth Spring hope to address this issue by teaching people how to be part of a community. We implement teachings and strategies that encourage people to look out for another and to embrace their role as neighbor–this is reconnecting.
“Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me by Your generous Spirit.” — Psalm 51:12
